My favourite season to work in is summer, but all four have something special that draws me in.
Let’s start with fall. It is hands down the most popular season for family photos in Thunder Bay – is it that we’re planted back at home: back from the summer holidays and weekends at camp? Is it the autumn leaves? New beginnings? The start of a fresh school year, and diving back into routine?
The earlier sunset makes for an accessible golden hour to families with younger children, and I love love love the texture of drying grass and crunchy leaves. Everything is soooo warm toned. This season is the biggest signal of change
Winter is harsh here, and winter is slow. Not a top choice season for scheduling family photos outdoors, but when we dooooo….. there’s no arguing how soft and crisp that winter light is. Rosy cheeks are an endearing, cute bonus.
The snowbanks recede, new birds start flocking back, and we get tricked into spring for it to be winter off and on again… THEN, the snow is gone for good and the trees start to bud. When the blossoms finally unfurl, we meet beneath them.
Now we enter summer… it’s green, and warm: here come the wildflowers. We start to dip our bare feet into water and stay up late with the sun. Some of us get to travel and some have visitors. Milestone events and BBQs jam pack the weekends. Summer is my favourite and feels the most joyous.
What would be your season of choice for photos?
